The naira continued its upswing against the United State dollar at both the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) Wholesale Dutch Auction System (WDAS) and the interbank market as demand for the greenback fell drastically yesterday.
Data posted on the CBN’s website showed that at the bi-weekly auction held yesterday, the apex bank sold only $145.27 million as against the $250 million it offered to the market.

ECOWAS to establish single currency in 2015
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) parliament has implied that there will be an introduction of single currency in the English speaking countries of the sub-region by 2015 and among all member states come 2020.
The Deputy Speaker of the Nigerian Senate Ike Ekweremadu, who doubles as the ECOWAS Parliament, said this after the meeting of the Administration, Finance and Budget Committee of the ECOWAS parliament at Enugu.
PPRA assures marketers of subsidy payment
Oil Marketers in Nigeria will get their subsidy claims for importation of petroleum products. This was made known by the Executive Secretary of the agency, Reginald Stanley, while speaking to journalists in Abuja over the weekend at the mid quarter performance review of PMS imports for the fourth quarter of 2011.
"While Marketers have been holding back to Imports due to the unavailability of credit lines by banks, the recent pronouncement of proposed N888billion for subsidy provided in the 2012 budget should give enough comfort, both to the Marketers and Banks to resume imports very aggressively," Stanley said.
Reps to probe Customs, CBN over ‘undeclared’ N200b revenue
The House of Representatives yesterday, queried the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS)and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over undeclared N200 billion revenue.
The revenue, which accumulated from the 0.5per cent of the total revenue/tariff collected by the Nigerian customs Service (NCS) and which ought to have been paid into the Federation Account is being paid into an account known as Economic Community of West African States(ECOWAS) Account domiciled in the CBN.
Job creation: Jonathan seeks Senate approval to borrow $7.9bn from World Bank
President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday sought the approval of the Senate to borrow $7.905 billion from the World Bank, Africa Development Bank, Islamic Development Bank, Exim Bank of China and Indian lines of credit.
Jonathan, informed the lawmakers of his intention, in a letter read on the floor of the chambers by Senate President David Mark. He said the money would be used to fund employment creation projects, in line with government’s transformation agenda.
Sale of nationalised banks to commence this month – AMCON
Asset Management Company of Nigeria, AMCON, has said it will commence the sale of the three nationalised banks this month just as the company has so far recovered N600 billion of the more than N2 trillion bad loans it acquired from banks.

Local Patronage Bill’ll raise consumption of local produce – Aganga
To encourage the consumption of locally manufactured products, the Federal Government has forwarded the Local Patronage Bill to the National Assembly.
Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr Olusegun Aganga, who made this known during a facility tour of the Oil and Gas Free zone, Onne, Rivers State, said it was part of efforts by government to create wider market for local produce.
CBN extends support to FRC
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Lamido Sanusi, has assured the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) of Nigeria of the apex bank’s support towards the implementation of the FRC Act and promotion of sound Financial Reporting and Corporate governance in Nigeria.
Sanusi made this known during the weekend, when the Executive Secretary of the FRC, Jim Obazee and his team paid him a courtesy visit.
FG to generate 370,000 jobs in 2012 - Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan has reiterated his administration’s determination to address the problem of youth unemployment in the country.
He also said the series of government projects outlined to address the situation will generate 370, 000 jobs across the country before the end of 2012.
