The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) parliament has implied that there will be an introduction of single currency in the English speaking countries of the sub-region by 2015 and among all member states come 2020.
The Deputy Speaker of the Nigerian Senate Ike Ekweremadu, who doubles as the ECOWAS Parliament, said this after the meeting of the Administration, Finance and Budget Committee of the ECOWAS parliament at Enugu.
He stated, during a dinner organized by him for the parliamentarians that under his leadership, the "Parliament will henceforth screen the list of Commissioners for the Commissions, scrutinize and pass budgets and laws that will transform the sub-region".
The Chairman of the committee on Administration, Finance and Budget of the Parliament, Alhaji Farouk Lawan and the fourth Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, Michael Nyaunu were also present at the dinner. Europe already has as a single currency; Euro. The East African region has also planned to introduce its single currency by 2012.
