UNILAG declares three days of mourning for VC’s death

The University of Lagos has declared three days of mourning in honour of its late Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adetokunbo Sofoluwe, who passed away at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital on Saturday.


During the mourning period, which commences from Monday May 14 to Wednesday May 16, all lectures, statutory meetings and other university activities at its three campuses will not hold.

81,565 students sat for unity schools’ exams – NECO

OWERRI – A total of 81,565 candidates sat for this year’s National Common Entrance Examination into Federal Government Unity Colleges and Federal Science and Technical Colleges nationwide.

The Registrar, National Examinations Council, NECO, Prof Promise Nwachukwu Okpala, disclosed this weekend, after an unscheduled inspection of some examination centres in Owerri.

UNILAG VC, Prof Sofoluwe is dead

Professor Adetokunbo Babatunde Sofoluwe, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos is dead.

According to reports, Professor Sofoluwe slumped during a meeting, yesterday, at the Senate Chambers of the institution and was rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, (LUTH).

Vanguard gathered that he was confirmed dead after efforts to revive him failed.

Boko Haram: FG to review security in varsities

The Federal Government is to review security arrangements in the nation’s higher institutions in response to the recent terrorist attack on the campuses of Bayero University Kano and the Gombe State University, Gombe.

The attack on BUK left close to 20 persons including 2 professors dead and several others seriously injured.

Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa’i, said this during the ministerial press briefing, in Abuja, on Thursday.

20 Ekiti State University students caught with fake exam permits

ADO-EKITI – No fewer than 20 part- time students of Ekiti State University, EKSU, were, Friday,  caught with with fake examination clearance papers  during the ongoing  first semester examination.

The development led to the suspension of the examination on the ground of alleged failure of the students to.pay their school fees.

According  to the Director of Part-Time Programme, Professor Edward Ogunleye, the alleged culprits were caught  during the screening of students who have paid their fees.

The National Policy Meeting of degree-awarding institutions where the cut-off marks for candidates seeking admissions into the nation’s universities for the 2012/2013 academic session will be decided has been scheduled to hold on May 21 in Abuja.

The Registrar and Chief Executive of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Adedibu Ojerinde, who dropped the hint yesterday, while granting audience to the management of the Abuja-based Nigerian-Turkish Nile University led by its Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bunyamin Kaptanolgu, in his office at Bwari, however bemoaned the desperation that had characterised the rush for university education at the expense of other arms of tertiary education in the country.

Students charged on new trends in media practice

LAGOS – Students of the Mass communication Department of Caleb University, Imota, Lagos, have been drawn into a new consciousness of what the global best practices of modern media entail in today’s world.

The guest speaker, Mr. Nosike Agokei, Group Managing Director, MTI Plc, in a lecture, entitled: “Telecommunications and the New Media” exhorted the students to belt up and rise to the challenges in the mass communication industry, in the wake of rapidly changing technology in telecommunications.

WAEC yet to repair killer lift

The West African Examinations Council, Yaba, Lagos, has yet to repair its collapsed lift, which killed a member of the National Union of Local Government Employees, identified simply as Fatai on March 28.

This is in spite of protests by Nigerians, particularly members of the NULGE. Nigerians are however irked by the insensitivity of WAEC to the danger the lift poses, particularly to youths who visit the place on a daily basis.
