We all know that eating sugary foods, and drinking coffee/soda are terrible for our teeth, but did you know that taking diet supplements are bad for your teeth? Or even getting some exercise through swimming?
1. Diet Supplements - contain chemicals that decrease production of saliva.
Saliva is what washes the food particles that cause decay, and neutralize acid levels. Remember that acid is what "thins the enamel, and makes your teeth appear brittle, dark, and cracked"
2. Teeth Whitening - is generally safe, but often people over-use the product. If you use too much and too frequently, it can damage your teeth and your gums.
3. Toothbrushes- are available in soft medium and hard, but dentists say that scrubbing your teeth with hard toothbrush bristles can cause your gums to recede, and make your teeth look old. Also, it turns out that brushing with soft bristles are more effective.
4. Birth Control Pills- change the levels of your hormones and because of this, women are prone to periodontal disease, an infection that occurs because your immune system can't "compensate for the amount of bacteria in your mouth"
(If you're taking The Pill, periodontist Nicholas Toscano says, you should see the dentist every three months for cleaning)
5. Frequent Snacking- If you eat a lot of food in one sitting, your body will produce more saliva, to wash away food particles. Smaller snacking won't produce enough saliva, which means your teeth are not naturally cleaned as well.
*Surprisingly, bananas are on the don't-eat list because their chewy/adhesive texture makes them easy to get stuck in your teeth!
6. Swimming- ! The chlorine in the water lowers the pH level, making your teeth very acidic. Dentists suggest brigning a toothbrush and brushing your teeth immediately after swimming.
