Police Commission serves retirement notice to 14 AIGs

Indications have emerged that 14 Assistant Inspectors General of Police inherited by the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), MD Abubakar, on assumption of office, may have finally been asked to go by the Police Service Commission (PSC).

This followed the notification of their retirement letters on Wednesday, which some of them have collected, while others are yet to collect theirs.

Port Harcourt Explosion was not a bomb attack - Gov. Amaechi

Governor of Rivers State Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has rebutted claims the explosion that occurred Thursday morning in Port Harcourt was a bomb attack.

Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi while speaking to journalists at the scene of the incident allayed fears that the explosion could have been a terror attack.

“All of you can act as eyewitnesses that what you have here is not a bomb explosion, what you have here is an attempt by three men to go and rob; we don’t know where they were heading to, where they were going to rob, but in their vehicle, they had an explosive device, a dynamite.

Explosion Hits Port Harcourt - Update 1

Two persons are feared dead with four others injured when an explosion rocked Rumuokoro area of Port Harcourt, Rivers state. The explosion occured at Rumuokoro area of Port Harcourt, at about 10:30am Thursday.

The cause of the explosion is yet to be determined as police sources said they are working to determine its cause.

"There was actually an explosion around Rumuokoro area of Port Harcourt," Lieutenant Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu told AFP.

Explosions rock two primary schools in Kano

KANO – Multiple explosions Wednesday night, hit two primary schools in Jayin and Hotoro Arewa in Kumbotso and Nasarawa local government areas respectively in Kano municipal.

An eyewitness told Vanguard that the attackers who came on a motorbike ordered watchmen at both schools out of the premises before attacking the schools.

The source further explained that the attack triggered pandemonium and forced night life to a halt as residents scampered to safety.

FG to pay NYSC members delayed allowance on Friday

Minister of Youth Development, Mr. Bolaji Abdullahi, on Wednesday assured corps members across the country that their delayed allowances would be paid latest on Friday.

Abdullahi gave the assurance after an outcry by corps members over the delay in the payment of their allowances.

He told State House correspondents that he had extracted a commitment from the Director-General of the National Youth Service  Corps, Brigadier-General Nnamdi Okore-Afia, that the delayed allowances would be paid by Friday.

Following a heavy downpour that hit Ibadan on Monday, no fewer that 3 people have been killed along Secretariat-University of Ibadan Road.

It was also reported that vehicles ran into the flood unknowingly as they were unaware that the firm handling the project along the road had diverted traffic to one section of the road.

Jonathan sued over move to reinstate Salami

ABUJA —  The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court has been asked to invoke its powers and abort any move by President Goodluck Jonathan to reinstate the suspended President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Isa Ayo Salami.

Salami was on August 18, 2011, axed from office by the National Judicial Council, NJC, on allegation that he violated the code of conduct for judicial officers in the country by engaging in acts of “judicial misconduct.”

Nigerian used ID of murder victim to work at US busiest airport for 20 years

United States is currently looking into how a Nigerian, Bimbo Olumuyiwa Oyewole, who had been using a stolen identity to work at Newark Liberty International Aiport, scaled through several security and background checks carried out in the last 20 years.

For 20 years, co-workers on the security team at one of the United States’ busiest airports knew him as Jerry Thomas.


His real name, authorities say, was Bimbo Olumuyiwa Oyewole, a Nigerian who used the name of a murder victim to hide his status as an illegal immigrant, the Associated Press reports.

Boko Haram carries out 118 attacks, kills 308 people – minister

Abuja -  The Minister of Police Affairs, retired Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade, says the Boko Haram sect has so far carried out 118 attacks in six northern states and the FCT, killing 308 people.

Olubolade said this on Tuesday in Abuja while enumerating the achievements and challenges of the ministry in the last one year at the on-going Ministerial press briefing.

FG faults North over N7bn compensation

Federal Government has faulted a suit by 16 northern states seeking the Supreme Court to order it to pay N7bn as outstanding value of the assets of the defunct Northern states marketing board.

In its preliminary objection to the suit, which was made available to journalists, the Federal Government, through its counsel, Mr. Ade Okeaya-Inneh, SAN, acting on behalf of the Office of the AGF, said the northern states’ claim was no longer valid.
