The Police in Enugu State yesterday arrested 25 suspected Boko Haram members near Nsukka.
According to an eyewitness, the suspects appeared to be indigenes of states in the North-West and North-East regions of the country.
About 27 different guns concealed in bags were found on the suspects. Axes, daggers, several other weapons and bomb- making materials were also recovered from the suspects.
The suspects claimed the bags contained foodstuff.
“We were on our normal stop-and- search when we suspected the vehicle, and we asked them where they were coming from. They said they were Zamfara indigenes, coming to do business in Enugu State.
“At that stage, we ordered them to open their bags and when they did, we discovered that arms and ammunition were properly concealed in most of them. We are still wondering how they were able to beat all the security posts all the way from Zamfara to this place.” A policeman said
The police said the suspects might have been on a mission to cause mayhem at the 41st convocation ceremony of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, which held on Friday
The suspects said they were hunters in search of game. But the Police Public Relations Officer in Enugu State, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, stated;
“There is no way they could have been hunters when weapons of different sizes were found on them.”
Amaraizi noted that they would be arraigned in court on today.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) said;
“Suspects numbering about 25 joined with the driver and the conductor, there by bringing the number to 27, were intercepted on Okpuje- Nsukka Road in a commuter Hiace bus with registration no Zamfara XA 581MRD .
“After interrogation, the suspects said they were coming from the northern part of the country and were heading for Uzouwani in Enugu State for a hunting expedition.”
