Facts are beginning to emerge on why gunmen invaded the Federal Prisons Koton/Karfe on Wednesday night and set awaiting trial inmates free.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that the hoodlums stormed the prison to facilitate the release of their colleagues, who were held behind bars.

Locals who reside close to the prison said that they saw three of the inmates being sandwiched by the gunmen numbering over 30 walking away after what was for them a successful operation.

Other inmates, who were set free during the raid by the gunmen, were initially trailing behind before they scattered in different directions.

Meanwhile, the State command of the Nigerian Prison Service has re-arrested 25 out of the 119 inmates that escaped from detention.

The spokesperson of the command, Mrs. Hadiza Aminu, disclosed this, yesterday, while briefing newsmen on the matter.

She posited that contrary to reports in the media, the hoodlums were not members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect, but rather a gang of armed robbers.

She disclosed that the re-arrested inmates were picked up in different locations in Koton-Karfe, as well as neighbouring villages along Lokoja-Abuja highway between Wednesday night and yesterday morning.

Mrs. Aminu further pointed out that the service had launched manhunt for the remaining inmates and urged them to surrender themselves voluntarily to the service immediately.

She revealed that all the 119 inmates that escaped during the gun attack on the prison by yet to be identified men were all awaiting trials and pointed out that all the convicted inmates of the cell were intact.
